A Holy Week Broadcast
Palm Sunday, March 29th 2015
Folks at Sicamous United Church were treated to a stellar performance of David Kai’s play `A Holy Week Broadcast’ this morning. Through means of our radio host Jerry Myah, fond of sensationalism and ratings, played by Steve Naylor, and our roving reporters Adam, earnest and serious, played by Russ Nickerson and Eva, the haughty fashion reporter, played by Kris Nickerson, we were led through the last week of Jesus’ life.
From the joy and hope of the Palm Sunday parade, through the last supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus, to moments after Jesus has been placed in the tomb, we were on a roller coaster ride of emotions.
A story so familiar to those who grew up in the church, took on a deeper significance as we watch and heard the attitude of the reporters change. Radio host Jerry Myah, angered by his reporters going `off the air’ as they kneel at the tomb of this Jesus character they were supposed to report on, ends the daily broadcast by addressing the listening audience, “You know folks, some people have their priorities all mixed up; I mean, what can be so important about this Jesus fellow? Two or two thousand years from now, who’s going to remember anything about him?”
This is a question still worth pondering.
Holy Week continues at Sicamous United Church on Friday, April 3rd at 7:00 PM, as we read from the gospel of John, spend some time in quiet reflection, and enhanced by gentle hymns and candle-light, consider the power of Good Friday.
Easter Sunday worship begins at 10:00 AM, enhanced by the great music of the Black & Bluez Band. Come, sing your heart out and open yourself to a message of hope and new life.
